The WBA Urban Benchmark measures and ranks the world's most influential companies on their efforts to shape sustainable, inclusive and resilient urban environments, tracking how companies address essential urban needs while respecting planetary boundaries across dimensions including decent work and human rights, environmental and climate impacts, social inclusion, and sustainability leadership. The 2026 edition assessed 300 companies across four key industries shaping urban environments: real estate, construction and engineering, transport, and utilities. Companies were scored on 24 urban-specific indicators plus 18 core social indicators, spanning four measurement areas: sustainable governance, inclusive cities, healthy cities, and climate change and resilient cities. The benchmark is designed to incentivise the private sector to take adequate responsibility for its role in ensuring affordable, safe and inclusive urban environments for all. Methodology
Environmental noise has been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the
second largest environmental health risk in Western Europe after air quality (World Health
Organization, 2011). Prolonged exposure to environmental noise has been shown to have harmful
effects on public health, community wellbeing and overall urban liveability, contributing to sleep
disturbance, impaired cognitive development, mental health problems, tinnitus and even heart
disease (World Health Organization, 2011). The construction and transport sectors contribute heavily
to urban noise levels. By adhering to noise regulations and best practices and adopting noise
reduction technologies, companies can contribute to creating healthier and more sustainable urban
environments.
Research Guidance
Applicability: Construction and transport companies
The company must disclose the following information to demonstrate the use of consistent mitigation measures to reduce noise and vibration impacts across vehicles, equipment, and operational sites.
1\. Evidence of mitigation measures, including engineering controls, operational adjustments, or investments in low-noise equipment or vehicles.
2\. A systematic approach ensuring measures are implemented consistently across sites and fleets.
3\. Measurable outcomes or improvements achieved through these mitigation efforts.
Note: For transport companies with only road transport operations, only noise mitigation measures need to be disclosed. For all other companies, both noise and vibration mitigation measures must be disclosed.
