About the data

The WBA Food and Agriculture Benchmark measures and ranks the world's most influential food and agriculture companies on their efforts to transform global food systems, tracking how companies work towards food that is healthy and nutritious, produced sustainably within planetary boundaries, and accessible and fairly produced for all. The 2026 edition assessed 350 companies spanning the entirety of the food and agriculture value chain, from agricultural inputs and commodities through to manufacturing, retail, and food service. Companies were scored on 23 food and agriculture-specific indicators and 18 core social indicators across four measurement areas: governance, sustainable food systems, healthy food systems, and inclusive food systems. The benchmark is developed in close collaboration with an Expert Review Committee and is designed to incentivise the most influential companies in the sector to adopt sustainable business practices across their own operations and supply chains, addressing critical issues including greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, freshwater use, nutrition, and living incomes for farmers, with human rights and social equity at its core. More information can be found here.
Small-scale producers are vital to the global food system, yet they often face significant
challenges that threaten their livelihoods and sustainability. These challenges include climate change,
market volatility, limited access to resources and socio-economic inequalities. Small-scale producers
engage with companies in multiple ways. They can be part of companies’ supply chains, providing raw
materials or fresh products for direct consumption, or they can be key buyers of companies’ products,
purchasing inputs like feed or fertiliser. Companies efforts towards enhancing the resilience of small-
scale producers is crucial for improving the livelihoods of millions of producers worldwide, as well as
ensuring stable and sustainable value chains.

Research Guidance:

The outcomes and impact of climate adaptation initiatives could be measured through metrics such as
Measuring improvements in water use efficiency
Measuring the percentage of farmers adopting climate-smart agricultural practices and/or climate-smart fisheries and aquaculture practices
Measuring improvements in infrastructure, such as irrigation systems and storage facilities, that support climate adaptation

The outcomes and impact of gender equality and women's empowerment initiatives could be measured through metrics such as
Improvements in their economic status
Collecting feedback from the women small-scale producers to adjust and improve their initiatives

The outcomes and impact of climate adaptation and/or gender equality and women's empowerment initiatives should be disclosed for the element to be met.
