About the data
The WBA Food and Agriculture Benchmark measures and ranks the world's most influential food and agriculture companies on their efforts to transform global food systems, tracking how companies work towards food that is healthy and nutritious, produced sustainably within planetary boundaries, and accessible and fairly produced for all. The 2026 edition assessed 350 companies spanning the entirety of the food and agriculture value chain, from agricultural inputs and commodities through to manufacturing, retail, and food service. Companies were scored on 23 food and agriculture-specific indicators and 18 core social indicators across four measurement areas: governance, sustainable food systems, healthy food systems, and inclusive food systems. The benchmark is developed in close collaboration with an Expert Review Committee and is designed to incentivise the most influential companies in the sector to adopt sustainable business practices across their own operations and supply chains, addressing critical issues including greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, freshwater use, nutrition, and living incomes for farmers, with human rights and social equity at its core. Methodology
Almost a third of the world’s population, 2.3 billion people, faced moderate or severe food
insecurity in 2021, up from 25% before the Covid-19 pandemic. At the same time, what we eat across
the world continues to fall short of the minimum standards for healthy and sustainable diets,
contributing to a marked rise in obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs): around
40% of all adults and 20% of all children are now overweight or obese (GNR, 2022). By improving the
nutritional quality of their portfolio, food companies can play a crucial role in helping transform our
food system and enabling access to healthy, affordable and sustainably produced food (GNR, 2022).
Research Guidance:
The company must disclose that it has:
benchmarked its definition of healthier‚ against at least one government-endorsed NPM
OR
It uses the NPM for reporting purposes
List of accepted NPM:
Health Star Rating System
Nutri-score
UK Traffic Lights
WHO regional nutrient profile models to identify unhealthy foods and beverages. (EURO, EMRO, WPRO, SEARO, PAHO, AFRO)

This indicator is applicable to companies operating primarily in the downstream value chain segments, comprising food and beverage manufacturers and processors, food retailers and restaurants and food services.
