About the data

The WBA Nature Benchmark measures and ranks the world's most influential companies on their efforts to protect the environment and its biodiversity, tracking how companies are reducing their negative impacts on nature and contributing to the protection and restoration of ecosystems, aligned with the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework. The 2026 edition assessed 750 companies across multiple sectors including agro-food, forestry, building, tourism and the blue economy. The benchmark is developed in close collaboration with an Expert Review Committee and partners including GRI, SBTN, and TNFD, with a methodology designed to incentivise companies to understand where nature-related risks are highest and act to halt damaging trends, while keeping human rights and social impacts at its core.

The United Nations has recently declared access to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable
environment as a universal human right (UN, 2021). However, business activities and infrastructure
projects often expose local communities to heightened environmental risks and adverse effects. This
challenge is further exacerbated by the violent and sometimes fatal assaults faced by environmental
human rights defenders globally, who also endure intimidation, harassment and criminalisation. In
response to these pressing issues, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has
developed a guide to help businesses incorporate environmental impacts into their human rights due
diligence processes (UNDP).The company must identify and assess its business’ (potential) adverse impacts that:
cause or worsen air, land, and water pollution, climate change, or biodiversity loss AND
remove or reduce the ability of individual persons, groups, and peoples to exercise and enjoy their human rights
