Ethical audits are carried out annually, where their Corrective action Points (CAP's) are included in part of the risk assessment. CAPS "are used as a development tool to improve ALL conditions and are generally looked upon as being a constant pro-active tool for overall improvement of the supplier... global standards ethical improvement."

In tier 1, Matalan has its head office employees take Modern Day Slavery Training. In terms of ensuring that their supply chain doesn't use slavery, they investigate where they source their materials. They have their empoyees visit suppliers in their factories and report suspicions of modern slavery or other unjust treatment.

Matalan requires all suppliers and factories to comply with their Ethical Trading Policy and undergo third party auditing along with committing to the Code of Conduct. This code confirms freely-chosen employment, prohibition of forced, bonded, or involuntary prison labour, non-requirement of depositing identity papers, freedom of association, the right to form trade unions, the support of employers of trade unions, and nondiscrimination against worker representatives. Matalan also has an Anti-Corruption and Bribery Policy which suppliers must comply with. All suppliers are audited annually and Matalan is a signatory party of the Bangladesh Accord.
