Equality gender analysis by Cyrille BROUILLER
+Discussion
The aim of the project we were given was to evaluate and analyse through different metrics the equality between genre in the top French company, I mean the 40 biggest one.
Thus, I decided to pick different company, I didn’t analyse the 40 companies it would have take me too much time. I decided to answer three questions on two companies that are really different. The company are Danone and L’Oréal. They are note on the same market, but they can have the same target customer.
To start with the comparison about gender equality, lets have a look on the CEO of the companies. For Danone it is Emmanuel Faber who started his new job on the 1st of December of 2017. For L’Oréal it is Jean Paul Agon since 2011. We can also take the example of Total company in order to be able to compare three different companies who have a different impact on the women. Indeed, normally L’Oréal will have more women in the management position than the two other as it provides a lot of cosmetic product for women, compare to Total which is more toward construction and extracting oil. Danone is between the both. Nevertheless, we can see that the three CEO of those company are Men and more generally CEO of the CAC 40 are men, no place is giver to Women. That are things that have to change to provide a better equality between man and woman.
Now let’s take a look at the percentage of female employees. There, we will see that company are not on the same level and some other are better than other. Regarding Danone, I found a number of 29,49%, so nearly 30% which is not that bad for a French company, but shows that women are less present in the company and that the equality is not, If it will be the case the number should have slide towards the 50%. For L’Oréal, it is the opposite as the percentage of female employee is 70%. In that case women are more represented than men. In that case the equality is not respected as women have a higher percentage than man. This can be explained by the fact that L’Oréal is a big group of cosmetic and that attract more women than Danone and Total. Speaking of total the percentage of female employee is above the 30% with a number of 32,5%. With this example we can see that a company that is supposed to attack more men have more female employee than Danone.
Finally let’s compare those three companies with the metrics “percentage of female in the management position”. This metric will help analyse if the result from the previous metrics is also fine with this one. I mean that if the number of women in the company is high but the percentage that are in the management position is low, that means that there is some more improvement to do. Indeed, in order to be fully equal, the presence of women in the management position should also be equal to male. For total the result is 25.5% which is not far from the previous result of (32,5%) which means that the proportion is nearly respected. For L’Oréal, the percentage is 46% which is high but is 20 point lower than the presence of women in the company (70%). Finally, Danone as a result of 49%. Here its different as the management position are more taken by women than men.
To conclude, with this study, we are no able to analyse the gender equality within the biggest French company. The top position such as CEO are not taken by women as for mainly all the company in the CAC 40, they are direct by man. However, we have seen that company are trying to have more and more women inside their company in order to have the parity. We can have different surprise such as Danone who have more women in the management position than man while the percentage of women in the company is less than men. In a company such a L’Oréal, it is different. Even if the company will attack more women, the management position is still taken more by men than women, but they are nearly getting to the exact equality. In fact, 70% of the employee are women and 46% of the management position are taken by women.
All in all, we can have so idea on the company equality, but we might be wrong, for example I believed that total was full of male employees, but it is wrong. Companies nowadays, are trying more and more to have the best equality they can have. It is also the mind of people you must change, because they do believe than company are not taking decisions. Thanks to the article we have read, we had seen than L’Oréal is the now the French company which as the beter male/female ratio.
It is today a crucial point for the company as it the path toward equality also in the salary, to expand the research we can letter look at the difference of salary between the man and women in the management position.
