Matalan wrote their first anti-slavery and human trafficking act, "In 2017 we published our first Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement." In an effort too; "combat modern-day slavery and human trafficking and to uphold human rights across all of our business and our supply chain."
They have carried out ethical audits across their factories, which will be an annual occurrence. All their suppliers go through an approval process through Matalan.
They became members of Sedex (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange); their audits meet the ETI (Ethical Trading Initiative) Base Code: some audits are approved by "approved independent leading auditing companies."
Matalan has its own Code of Conduct outlined on its website.
I concluded the same about Matalan as Angela did. The Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Statement includes structure and supply chain transparency, policies of ethics, a code of conduct, policies against bribery and human trafficking, protection of whistleblowers, commitment to due diligence as a member of SEDEX, an outline of risk assessment, discretion of partnerships, commitment to sustainability as a member of BCI, progress made against modern slavery, information on particularly vulnerable working groups, information on unannounced audits in the UK supply chain, an understanding of training implemented, and a statement on how to continue building the work done to prevent modern slavery and human trafficking.
This statement has been approved by the Board of Matalan Retail Limited and constitutes our slavery and human trafficking statement for the financial year ended February 2021. (p.7)
