We need to get rid of the "www." in that source link (currently not permitted because of hard-coded protection. sigh, need to address in code)
We would like to validate sources, eg by making sure urls return valid responses

Yes and yes, with regards to point 2 - I believe (you know better than me) when you manually add individual sources it will check if it is valid but not when you do it via an import it does not.
well, I think we validate that it's a _legal_ (as in, well-formed) url, but I don't think we check to see whether it's getting a response, whether for individual or bulk imports
