Overview

Soil Contamination assesses how a company prevents, monitors, discloses and remediates the build-up of hazardous substances in on-site or adjacent soils and sediments. It covers:

  • sources of contamination - spills, leaks, tailings, pesticide and fertiliser application, combustion ash, wastewater sludge, storage tanks, landfill leachate and historical industrial activities;
  • pollutants of concern - heavy metals (e.g., Pb, Hg, Cd, As), persistent organic pollutants (PAHs, PCBs, dioxins), hydrocarbons, PFAS, nutrients, salts and pathogenic organisms;
  • site assessment, soil-sampling and risk-screening protocols that determine contaminant concentrations, migration pathways and exposure receptors (workers, communities, groundwater, ecosystems);
  • preventive measures - secondary containment, corrosion protection, spill-prevention and control plans, clean-chemistry substitutions;
  • remediation strategies - excavation, stabilisation/solidification, soil washing, bioremediation, phyto-remediation, in-situ chemical oxidation, monitored natural attenuation - and verification of clean-up to regulatory standards;
  • reporting of contaminated-site inventories, remediation progress, residual liabilities and compliance with frameworks such as EU ESRS E2 (Pollution), GRI 306-3 & 306-4, the proposed EU Soil Monitoring & Resilience Directive, and national soil-protection laws.
