Five years ago, four sorts of organic chocolate were added to the extensive chocolate range produced by Ritter – one of the biggest manufacturers of chocolate in Germany. Another one followed a year later – macadamia. You might think that Ritter would come up with a little organic anniversary and celebrate the introduction of five organic varieties of chocolate to public acnote. You couldn’t be more wrong! Instead, the company in Waldenbuch to the south of Stuttgart went into reverse gear – at least as far as the organic cocoa of 2,700 Nicaraguan small farmers is concerned. A short time ago, the farmers were recommended to change to the UTZ Standard, in other words to use pesticides and artificial fertilizer.
