Affected IUCN Red List and National Conservation List Species (G4-EN14) Methodology

In 2018, the GRI G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines were superseded by the GRI Sustainability Reporting Standards (GRI standards). This is the methodology for G4-EN14-a which has been superseded by GRI 304-4. The current GRI 304-4 metric can be found here: Affected IUCN Red list and Conservation list species GRI 304-4

About

This metric is based on the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G4 Guidelines. It covers one of the reporting requirements of Indicator G4-EN14 - 'Total number of IUCN Red List species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by operations, by level of extinction risk'.

This Indicator helps the organization to identify where its activities pose a threat to endangered plant and animal species. By identifying these threats, the organization can initiate appropriate steps to avoid harm and to prevent the extinction of species. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and national conservation list species serve as authorities on the sensitivity of habitat in areas affected by operations, and on the relative importance of these habitats from a management perspective.

Methodology

To calculate the total number of affected IUCN Red list and national conservation list species - G4-EN14:

  • Identify the location of habitats affected by the operations of the organization that include species on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and on national or regional conservation lists.
  • Compare the information in the below mentioned lists with the species outlined in planning documentation and monitoring records to ensure consistency. Use this information to identify the total number of species in habitats for each extinction risk category.

Relevant Definition:

IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
An inventory of the global conservation status of plant and animal species developed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) (68).

Reporting on this Indicator should include the following contextual information as a comment to the metric value:

  • G4-EN14-a: the total number of IUCN Red List species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by the operations of the organization, by level of extinction risk:
  •      Critically endangered
  •      Endangered
  •      Vulnerable
  •      Near threatened
  •      Least concern
